{"id":251,"date":"2003-02-18T11:09:00","date_gmt":"2003-02-18T11:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.beatzo.net\/blog\/2003\/02\/vampire-sestina\/"},"modified":"2003-02-18T11:09:00","modified_gmt":"2003-02-18T11:09:00","slug":"vampire-sestina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beatzo.net\/blog\/2003\/02\/vampire-sestina\/","title":{"rendered":"Vampire Sestina"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Neil Gaiman is this <i>awesome<\/i> writer I fell in love with once upon a time&#8230;.he was one of the guys who made comics part of the literary mainstream, with the epic Sandman series&#8230;went on to hunt out other Gaiman works, his novels &#8220;American Gods&#8221;, &#8220;Stardust&#8221; and &#8220;Neverwhere&#8221; among others, articles and idiosyncratic collaborations ( note to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livejournal.com\/userinfo.bml?user=2fargon\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"17\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/stat.livejournal.com\/img\/userinfo.gif\" ><\/a><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.livejournal.com\/users\/2fargon\/\">2fargon<\/a><\/b> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livejournal.com\/userinfo.bml?user=psasidhar\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"17\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/stat.livejournal.com\/img\/userinfo.gif\" ><\/a><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.livejournal.com\/users\/psasidhar\/\">psasidhar<\/a><\/b> and everybody else into H2G2, Gaiman wrote the unofficial guide to the series, called <b>Don&#8217;t Panic<\/b>.<br \/>\nThis little gem was something I discovered in &#8220;The Mammoth book of Vampires&#8221;&#8230;.a fitting end to the collection.<\/p>\n<p>                              <b>Vampire Sestina<\/b><\/p>\n<p>                       I wait here at the boundaries of dream,<br \/>\n                       all shadow-wrapped.  The dark air tastes of night,<br \/>\n                       so cold and crisp, and I wait for my love.<br \/>\n                       The moon has bleached the color from her stone.<br \/>\n                       She&#8217;ll come, and then we&#8217;ll stalk this pretty world<br \/>\n                       alive to darkness and the tang of blood.<\/p>\n<p>                       It is a lonely game, the quest for blood,<br \/>\n                       but still, a body&#8217;s got the right to dream<br \/>\n                       and I&#8217;d not give it up for all the world.<br \/>\n                       The moon has leeched the darkness from the night.<br \/>\n                       I stand in shadows, staring at her stone:<br \/>\n                       Undead, my lover . . . O, undead my love?<\/p>\n<p>                       I dreamt you while I slept today and love<br \/>\n                       meant more to me than life &#8212; meant more than blood.<br \/>\n                       The sunlight sought me, deep beneath my stone,<br \/>\n                       more dead than any corpse but still a-dream<br \/>\n                       until I woke as vapor into night<br \/>\n                       and sunset forced me out into the world.<\/p>\n<p>                       For many centuries I&#8217;ve walked the world<br \/>\n                       dispensing something that resembled love &#8212;<br \/>\n                       a stolen kiss, then back into the night<br \/>\n                       contented by the life and by the blood.<br \/>\n                       And come the morning I was just a dream,<br \/>\n                       cold body chilling underneath a stone.<\/p>\n<p>                       I said I would not hurt you.  Am I stone<br \/>\n                       to leave you prey to time and to the world?<br \/>\n                       I offered you a truth beyond your dreams<br \/>\n                       while all you had to offer was your love.<br \/>\n                       I told you not to worry and that blood<br \/>\n                       tastes sweeter on the wing and late at night.<\/p>\n<p>                       Sometimes my lovers rise to walk the night . . .<br \/>\n                       Sometimes they lie, cold corpse beneath a stone,<br \/>\n                       and never know the joys of bed and blood,<br \/>\n                       of walking through the shadows of the world;<br \/>\n                       instead they rot to maggots.  O my love<br \/>\n                       they whispered you had risen, in my dream.<\/p>\n<p>                       I&#8217;ve waited by your stone for half the night<br \/>\n                       but you won&#8217;t leave your dream to hunt for blood.<br \/>\n                       Good night, my love.
