And contrary to what one might expect, it is not related to our favorite <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neilgaiman.com\/\">Wordsmith in Black<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The word &#8216;Gaiman&#8217; here is an abbreviation of &#8220;Gaikoku no manga&#8217;, literally, &#8216;foreign comics&#8217;. This refers to comics\u00a0translated from foreign work and published in Japan. For those of you who fret over what is comics and what is manga and bug-eyed-styles and all that, here you go: &#8216;Civil War&#8217; translated into Japanese and published in Japan becomes manga, and can even get nominated for a manga award. You can keep your Western biases to yourself, thank you.<\/p>\n<p>The list of comics nominated since the award was instituted in 2011 shows a curious mash-up of titles, including\u00a0the aforementioned Marvel title;\u00a0<em>Superman: Red Son\u00a0<\/em>rubs shoulders with the likes of\u00a0Nicholas de Crecy&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Celestial Bibendum\u00a0<\/em>(French), Schuiten and Peeters&#8217;\u00a0<em>Les Cit\u00e9s Obscures<\/em>\u00a0(Belgium),<em>\u00a0<\/em>Lat&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Town Boy\u00a0<\/em>and <em>Kampung Boy<\/em>\u00a0(Malaysia),<em>\u00a0<\/em>Joe Kelly and Ken Niimura&#8217;s\u00a0<em>I Kill Giants. <\/em>All of which make for great, solid reading \u2014 though the jury&#8217;s still out on\u00a0<em>The New 52: Shazam<\/em>, which managed to make an appearance on the 2015 nomination list. (The previous sentence is vague hyperbole, the prize went to Sweden&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Sayonara September<\/em>, by\u00a0\u00c5sa Ekstr\u00f6m)<\/p>\n<p>One thing to note: the titles nominated are based on translation date, and not on publication date. This causes similar confusion as the &#8216;Best US Edition of International Material (Asia)&#8217; Eisner award, where classic material ends up being nominated alongside newer ones, just because they were translated the last year.\u00a0In 2016, a work by Shigeru Mizuki\u00a0from the 80s (<em>Showa: A History of Japan<\/em>) beat the contemporary\u00a0<em>Master Keaton\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Assassination Classroom <\/em>in the Eisners.Doesn&#8217;t that make it overly confusing to judge something that is fresh along with another that has been coated with\u00a0the patina of time and generational acceptance?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today I learned that there is an award for comics called the Gaiman award.
