A poster in this forum sent a link to an interesting item on eBay right now. A mint, unrestored copy of Amazing Fantasy 15, the 1962 comic in which Spider-man made his first appearance. What is interesting is not just the fact that this is one of the rarest comics in human history – the seller seems to be a believer in fair play, in his own words, and refuses to end the auction even though people have made flat offers ( someone made an offer of 20000$ and he refused!) And on top of that, he has volunteered to pay 15% of the winnings to the HERO initiative<\/a>, a benefit for retired comic book creators. <\/p>\n

I just have to say that it is an amazing feat that you will not end the auction and sell it to the gentleman, whom offered to fly you to his offices. This book is a PIECE OF HISTORY a cgc 9.4 copy of AF #15 sold on PEDIGREE COMICS for $150.000 dollars. This is the first appearance and origin of SPIDERMAN and never has an unslabbed af #15 been offered in this shape and pedigree. Lets say the book recieved a grade of 9.6 or 9.8…I believe a cgc 9.8 copy would sell for $750.000 to 1 million dollars! My advice to you is to end the auction and fly to Sarasota Florida and grade the book and enjoy the wealth you will gain from auctioning the book slabbed at a 9.6 grade. I first have to say that whenlisting this item, I did not anticipate such an overwhelming andpositive response, in fact I thought the auction would end at under$5,000. Payment plans and layaway plans are tricky since there wouldneed to be some sort of legal oversight and enforcement should thewinning buyer later decide that they no longer want the item and stoppaying, which would then be a tremendous setback for me. I think thatoffering a payment plan would have had to have been established fromthe beginning for it to have been fair to potential bidders who mayhave been turned off at the idea of having to pay a large lump sum. I was in NH forbusiness, and the gentleman was lamenting how his business was goingaway and how his family was having a hard time keeping the doors openas more people had become less interested in shopping in hobby shops,and so the store was nearing foreclosure. I was interested incollecting Civil War memorbilia of the 54th Regiment at the time, andhaving had hard times myself in the past, I related to the gentlemanand offered to pay more than his asking price for several uniformbuttons I wanted to purchase. He said he would not accept any more thanthe fair value for the items being sold, and would not accept donationin kind. He added however, that he was willing to offer to sell me anitem at the price equivalent to what I would have added to the originalsale. The item he was offering was Amazing Fantasy 15. As I’vementioned before, I was unknowledgeable about Amazing Fantasy or SpiderMan at the least. I understood where the gentleman’s pride was comingfrom, this having been his business and all. It was his way ofupholding his dignity while still being able to pay the mortgage.Gathering from what the gentleman had told me, this issue had come froma lot of books that had been sent for grading. Somehow this particularcopy never made it to the graders and ended up in an estate sale andwas bought by another gentleman, and when that owner passed away, hiswife brought it to the hobby shop in exchange for a vintage mirror.According to the gentleman, this particular book was the only ungradedbook that came from White Mountain, which I assume is somewhere likeColorodo or Vermont. So, I paid the gentleman $2000 for the book, whichwas what I would have given him extra for the buttons, and had storedit since. In all fairness, that’s why I started the bid for this itemat $2000. Also, ebay is agreat place to auction, but a more specialized service like HeritageAuctions (whom I’m not affiliated with), typically will get you muchmore return on these books, especially high grade Goldenage books foradvanced collectors. If you really want to maximize and get more fordonations, that Marvel #1 in the condition you claim would realize morethan $200K and graded as claimed would be even more in this market! As you can imagine, I’ve beenresponding to quite a few messages regarding this comic (over a hundrednow). I will have the MC#1 comic scanned soon, hopefully moreprofessionally than Walgreens (esp. if it’ll be worth more than $200k).The current scanner seems to have a brown tinge on the glass, and Idefinitely don’t want MC#1 or any comic to be picking up all kinds ofpublic nasties. As far as auction houses are concerned, I feel that ifthe big machines want to get their hand in the pot, then averagehobbyists should also be able to do so. I’d allow this platform to bean even battlefield, fair and square in a no-hold no-bribe no-buy trueauction.
