Vampires. Any well-writen book about vampires has been on my must-by list.
This one’s supposed to be a controversial book on Hollywood and the biggest scandals. Beautiful photographs, and a nice commentary.
After the Sabriel book, could the sequel be far behind? Glad I got it at a low price, though I wanted a hardcover….
black-mask.com has the eBook of this, and I enjoyed the first couple of pages. Besides, who can forget? This was the book that inspired a movie starring Douglas Fairbanks Sr. One night, in distant Gotham city, a young boy named Bruce went to see that movie with his parents. For him, that night would never end…..
The Talisman was good. I had been waiting for the sequel for a long time. And when the sequel came out, I waited for it to come to Best Book Stall. Ah!
One heckuva white-heat read, this one I finished on Saturday itself. Bradbury had initially written short stories about a family, referred to as The Family, who live in The House, the great-Grand-mere being Nef, a mummy who occasionally needs 2000-year old wine to wet her lips. (Some of the stories I remember reading in the “Collected Short Stories of Ray Bradbury”. )Couple of things I didn’t know about the book – one of the short stories here, the first was rejected by all horror magazines, until one such mag decided to use it as a basis of a Theme issue. This led to Bradbury meeting illustrator Charles Addams ( him of the Addams family fame), and they planned to create this book together. however, Addams passed away before the book could be completed.
Another book I had been waiting to read for a long time.
I had heard of the Tom Ripley books long after the movie was released. And turns out there is a series of books. Crime noir. A neat Anti-hero. Trivia: Patricia HIghsmith also wrote Strangers on a Train which was made by Hitchcock into the movie of the same name.
This one promises to be different, not the usual fanstasy stuff that Barker writes. Let’s see.
JIm Morrison’s biography. i would be crazy if I didn’t buy it.
These are two of the newest Burke novels. Just when Vachss was falling into a rut – having an indestructible anti-hero doesn’t help woo new readers – he decides to kill off a major character and nearly kill Burke. Bound to be good!
Another long-awaited read.
Laurell Hamilton wrote the Anita Blake vampire series, which are so very cool. In this, she deals with The Faerie.
The first book was too good. I hope I get the third book soon and at an equally low price.
Saw this in Odyssey, the back-page promised an interesting read. It’s got nothing to do ith Samurai or Japan or the upcoming Tom Cruise movie. It’s about a kid and a single mom who compensates for the lack of a father-figure in her son’s life by Akira Kurosawa movies. One of those books I never thought I would get to read, let alone buy….
After all the fuss I made out of Michael Chabon after Adventures of Kavalier and Klay, I went nutzo about finding this. Now I have to search fot Summerland, too.
I finished this yesterday. My faith ( or the lack of it) in Hollywood has fallen to unmentionable levels. The movie is good, no doubt, but it has nothing to do with the book other than that it’s about an idiot savant. Even the starting line has been bowdlerized in the movie! I don’t recall seeing Gump going to space or walking among English-speaking, Chess-playing cannibals, or having an ape named Sue as a partner anywhere in the movie.
*rubs hands* Eh heh heh heh.
Long-awaited. I am going to finish this tonight.
There are two other Joanne Harris books there. let’s see if I get them too.
Simple rule of thumb – Philip K Dick rules!
For the first time in my life, I got a huge stack of Star Wars novels and I was forced to ignore the bulk of them for sometime. Got three from the New Jedi Order series, which I just found out are numbers 6, 8 and 13. I will have to wait for the others now.
The end of a problem, and the beginning of a new one. I now have the complete Sally Lockhart Trilogy. But because I bought Book 3 of His Dark Materials Trilogy, I can’t do anything much, other than waiting for the first two.
Minor Update: Sheesh! How could I forget this? Along with the above list, there was also –
This is a collection of short stories by different authors who interpret the Sandman mythos. And this has a story behind it. Rishi bought it when we were still in the Twelfth. And I borrowed it, and (ahem) lost it. I have to give it back to him now, but my fingers are crossed.
Whew
Oh no, its that BOOKAHOLIC beatzo again…..
Got only the stuff I really wanted. Really.
Haven’t we heard this before, lol? On the serious side, I still can’t figure out how you manage to read so much, man.
Re: Whew
I still can’t figure out how you manage to read so much, man.
Simple. One at a time.
Or (sometimes) two at a time. Or three, or five.
I dunno how long it will take me to finish this lot, though. :-(
Cool !
You need to come to Bangalore soon !
I didn’t know Ray Bradbury had an entire book about the Family. Its a collection of the short stories, is it ?
And oh, please spend 240 bucks each on The Northern Lights and The Subtle Knife. I’ll reimburse the money if you didn’t like Northern Lights. ;-)
Re: Cool !
From The Dust Returned is a collection of the original short stories, along with some chapters that tie loose ends together, and some more stories.
I promise to read His Dark Materials. It’s a little down the stack. Will get to it in time.
What’s on your read-pile right now?
Re: Cool !
Oh, I just finished a re-read of Goblet of Fire. I got so pissed after OoTP that I had to go back and reaffirm my faith in JK Rowling ! ;-)
I might start on the others in the series again, or return to the Tin Drum
Re: Cool !
By any chance, have you read/do u have the Artemis Fowl books? Ideas/opinions?
I still can’t believe u got so pissed off with OotP. :-)
Re: Cool !
I have the first book in the Artemis Fowl series. I’ve read the second too, they are pretty good. No comparison with HP, though!
I’ll give OoTP a second shot, once I finish re-re-reading the first three ;-)
Holy moley! That’s a lotta books.
Stephen King/Peter Straub – Black House The main problem I had with this was the narration — the author’s voice speaks directly to the reader throughout the book, which bugged me. But the story is great, one of the better Stephen Kings in the last ten years, I’d say. I still haven’t re-read The Talisman, even thought I keep planning to. I’m about to start re-reading The Gunslinger, instead (that new, revised version).
Ray Bradbury – From The Dust Returned
Ray Bradbury – The Martian Chronicles I haven’t read the former yet, but I really want to, now. And I loved the latter. My favorite Bradbury.
Patricia Highsmith – Ripley’s Game Have you read the first one, yet, the one the movie came from? I liked it a great deal, but haven’t started the sequels, yet.
Now I have to search fot Summerland, too. Summerland is the only Chabon I’ve read yet — I started Kavalier & Klay, but I don’t know, I just wasn’t in the mood for it, I guess. I’ll try again someday. Summerland was great. Especially for a baseball fan.
Philip Pullman – The Amber Spyglass Strangely, I haven’t read the 3rd, but I read the 1st two. The first book was okay, but it didn’t really grab me that much. The second one I thought was AMAZING. And you’d think I’d be raring to finish the trilogy, but the same thing happened as with Kavalier & Klay — I just didn’t feel into it at the time, and I didn’t finish. Barely got started. I think I have to reread the 2nd before I try the 3rd.
I am still in two minds about whether I should read Black House/i> before a rereading of The Talisman. The problem is, my copy of The Talsiman is a 1000 miles away, where my parents live. Of course, I could always buy a new copy….
I haven’t read the first Ripley book. Haven’t seen the movie either. Have heard a lot of comments about the series, so decided to give this a try.
I would highly recommend From The Dust Returned. But I think a better option would be to buy the collected Stories of Ray Bradbury.
Ripley
I bought a single volume set of three Ripley books (got this from Blossoms). Read the first two. They are worth a read, quite different from what I expected. Haven’t seen the movie(s) though
Re: Ripley
Does that collection include the first book? I would have to pick it up, then.
There were/are three Ripley books at the sale. I hid the other two (The Boy who followed Ripley and Ripley Underground) in a safe corner, and bought this one to get a feel. Since u recommend them, I think I can safely buy them, eh?
Re: Ripley
Yes, the collection does include the first book. It has The Talented Mr Ripley, Ripley Underground and Ripley’s Game. I read the first two and liked them.
Might be good to get the first book before you start on the others. Not strictly necessary of course, but I think it would help to give you a background of how talented Mr Ripley is
Re: Ripley
Oh, that means Ripley’s Game is put on hold.
And that also means I get something good to read the next time I am in Bangalore.;-)
Cooooool… another book-addict!
All these were for 75 rupees each.
Where is this book stall??? Lemme at it??
Seriously… where is it?
Best Book Stall. Near Ashoka Hotel, Lakdi-ka-pul, Hyderabad.
Tonnes of goodies still there, and it’s the end of the month. :-((
*sigh*
I knew it was too good to be true. I can’t get to Hyderabad.
Btw, is this like a book fair, or is it a regular bookshop?
It’s a regular second-hand books shop, with some new stock that’s being put up as a sale. Prices being Rs 50 ( all classiscs, children’s books, M&B ), Rs 75 ( the kind of books I bought, sci-fi, fantasy, general stuff), and Rs 95 ( the pulp writers – Archer, Sheldon, segal, Grisham etc)
bastardo!
u really know where and how to get u’r stuff!!.. i envy u’r instincts :p
Re: bastardo!
You mind if I go “eh heh heh heh”? :-P
