A short quiz. I am not posting this on Quizbusters because of a couple of reasons. Primarily because this is not a good quiz. This is more of an ego-stoking thing, brought about by a few discoveries made while I was using ( what else! ) Google for not-so-official purposes over the weekend. Also because these are not meant to be answered – Now that’s stupid, I know – what else are questions for, if not answers? – but really, it’s the sixth question you need to get, not all of them. If you get six, you get the rest. Of course, you can also work Question 6 out if you get any, or some of questions 1-5.

Non-Indian answerers:- Feel free to use google to get the connect. The desis ( even the non-resident ones ) better play fair.

Onward, then.

1. A film by Robert Altman, based on Raymond Chandler’s penultimate novel, in which Altman reinvents Philip Marlowe as someone who has been sleeping for thirty years and wakes up in LA of the 1970’s. Altman called it his “Rip Van Marlowe” concept. Arnold Schwarzenneger’s second movie ( he plays a dialogue-less muscleman ) Name?

2. ______, ‘Badshah Hamara‘ by Rajbhuja Dutt Choudhary, ‘Namo Hindustan‘ by Saraladevi. Fill in the first blank, along with requisite fundaes.

3. In Indian mythology, its curative properties were attributed to the belief that a few drops of heavenly nectar fell on it. It was the main protection from Insects, who were said to be the creation of Asuras. What?

4. The measurement scale was invented by James Hardy and his research colleagues Herbert Wolff and Helen Goodell at Cornell University where from 1950 to 1959, they carried out pioneering experiments on pain. Hasrdy, Wolff and Goodell used precisely calibrated radiant heat directed to the foreheads or hands of trained experimental subjects. They asked the subjects to report each “just noticeable difference” in the intensity of pain they experienced, and graphed their responses on a scale they called ____. Which scale?

5. Ok, a dud. I can’t really think of anything to connect to the theme. But let me try something that connects to Question 4. Pretty straight and simple – who is the female vocalist on the haunting interlude of The Prodigy’s Smack My Bitch Up?

6. A key element in Sufi thought, and is analogous to Nirvana in Buddhism. Once the Sufi becomes assiduous in dthikr, or rememberance of Allah, they claim that he acquires sufficient tranquility of heart to experience a delusion which helps him pass through the various stages described below. First he is bewildered, then intoxicated with love of the Remembered One, and finally he passes through the stage of ___________, or annihilation, in which he becomes fully absorbed to the point of becoming unaware of himself or the objects around him. Every existing thing seems to vanish, and he feels free of every barrier that could stand in the way of his viewing the Remembered One and nothing else.
the ultimate goal of the Sufi movement is _____, and Wusool the meeting and unification of the human soul with Allaah in this life. Fill the gap.

Well, tha-tha-that’s all, folks. Don’t kill me!

  1. Q 6. Fanaa – the sufi version of nirvana

I think this whole quiz reeks of ARR and aayutha ezhuthu..

    Q3. Tulsi??
For the life of me I cannot figure out what is the connection.

Q2 Jana Gana Mana – sung with these songs.

I think a look at the playlist of Aayutha ezhuthu and some intelligent googling will get the answers but these were the ones I know.

  2. Second comment

Okay, Q2 – I would like to keep my options open.. Neem also since it wards off insects!!
Beatzo, you better remember you take two guesses on my quizzes:)..so I need the benefit if tulsi or neem proves to be right:D

I still dontknow what the connection is with aayutha ezhuthu.

    Cheerio..

    From The Lost Highway

Ha ha ha ha ….this one was fun….the answers are (1) The Last Goodbye, (2)Jana Gana Mana, (3)Neem, (4)Dol, (5)Shahin Badar and (6)Fanaa (not very sure of this one, but the best guess and also helped by mrsgollum’s comment there). The connection is obvious…but I somehow couldn’t connect Jana Gana Mana (I am a little slow you see). Actually Dol and Ms Badar helped me get 1, 3 and 6. What’s with 2?

    • Bullseye on all. well, you would have heard the Hindi version, so can’t blame you for not knowing the Jana Gana Mana connection. Dhakka Laga Bukka is the Hindi version, and in Tamil ( Ayutha Ezhuthu ) the song is Jana Gana Mana.

    • Correct.

Actually, all these answers are titles to the songs from a recent album by AR Rahman, released as Yuva in Hindi and Ayutha Ezhuthu in Tamil. The first song is named Hey Goodbye Nanba, vague connection, I know. :-)

  4. 1. “The Long Goodbye” starring Elliot Gould I think?
    2. no idea
    3. pretty sure this is neem, which has a lot of therapeutic properties
    4. I could probably look this up, but that would be cheating
    5. again, could look up, but…
    6. Definitely Fanaa, which i think literally means “annihilation” or even the “annihilation of annihilation” sort of like the whole sufi ‘eating hunger’ thing.

Well, now that I got a barely passing grade on your quiz, I should introduce myself: hello.

I live in America, in Boston, but I have spent some time in India, and was raised by parents who practiced (among other things) Siddha Yoga and Sufism.

To make a long story short: when I was in India, I bought some unrefined sandalwood oil and really took a liking to the stuff. Unfortunately the only thing you can buy stateside is the sandalwood perfume. I recently had the idea to find someone on LJ in India, who might be able to help me acquire what I am looking for. After doing some searches, I came accross your journal, and your excellent quiz, and thought, “well, if this isn’t my man, i’d at least like to be his friend.”

    So there you have it.

    • The ones you attempted are correct! The connection happens to be an album by AR Rahman…

Well, as for sandalwood oil, tell me more. How exactly can I be of help?

  5. haha

For once, you dint tell me *all* the answers but one :p
    Here i go:
    1)
2)Jan gan man, rabindnath tagore. these 3 were contenders for national anthem or something? The 2nd song from rahman’s Yuva
    3)Amrit? Sanjeevani? not sure.
    4)
    5) Shaheen Badr (check the spelling). She also sang doldol for yuva
6)Fanaa. The last song in rahman’s album Yuva

Theme: Rahman’s score for Yuva :p

  6. I am late but…

    I did not cheat!

    1. The Long Goodbye
    2. :( clueless
    3. Neem?
    4. I did not know this but just had to look it up. So it is this.
    5. Man, if this is a bad quiz, I want to see the good ones. Have to visit Quizbusters on regular basis.
    6. Fanaa
