Harry Potter and the Bloody Half Price

Ah well. psasidhar is off somewhere in the wilderness, so I can’t leech it off him, like the last time. moccacino writes gloating emails which proclaim that at about this time tomorrow, she will have read the book and I would be picking at my toenails in absolute desperation. Better sense tells me not to spend 640 rupees just for the heck of the First Day Read, because I would undoubtedly either get a copy in the mail, or buy a pirated/second-hand edition off the streets later.

But I can’t help wondering – shouldn’t there be a way out of this? Something like, I buy the book first thing tomorrow morning, read it, and sell it off to anyone who wants it, at a legitimate discount. What’s in it for me? The pleasure of the First Day Read. What’s in it for the individual who buys it off me? A sizeable discount on an already sizeable discount, and the pleasure of owning a hardcover first edition of Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince for the rest of your life.

Go ahead. Bite it, fanboy.

  1. If we ever end up living in the same city, we could do the “you read it on then first day, then sell it to me at a nice discount” thing. Conditions (shall) apply :-)

  2. I see you’re not yet soulless enough to make money off helpless fanboys/girls. You really should hold on to it for 20 years. By then, Rowling will have her own church courtesy the marketing department of her publishers, she will be a saint, your blog will be famous, and slavering addicts will pay gazillions to buy your First Read, gollum, gollum. And, for this act of unspeakably profitable evil, you will join a Hall of Infame that includes George Lucas, Donald Rumsfeld, Bill Gates and the Wachowski Bothers.

btw, what would be the politically correct way to say “fanboy/girl”? Fan-people? Buttheads?

    • You know, you really should not use the words “fanboy” and “politically correct” in the same sentence.

Making money off collectibles – no sir, I am not there yet. It just gives me a kick to know that I own something that other people might lust after, but no, I don’t think I’ll ever be selling any of my stuff on eBay. Maybe if I have multiple copies…but then again, my multiple copies of comics go to a couple of comic-collecting friends in Guwahati.

  3. Pre-ordered it for my wife from Amazon, got it delivered gift-wrapped to my door at 7 am on Saturday.

Have already finished it by noon on Sunday… we were out of the house for most of the day on saturday. (Yes, my wife hasn’t opened it yet, she gets more free time during the week, when I am away in Manchester.)

Word of advice … if you haven’t read it yet… you are not missing much. (although i did prefer this one to book 5)

And I now know who dies…. and who doesn’t ;-)

    • Word of advice … if you haven’t read it yet…

*snicker* You really think I wouldn’t have? Bought a copy at 9 in the morning, finished it at 10 PM on Saturday. ( Had loads of work during the day, so the reading got postponed)

But thanks for the mail. :-D
