panacea

A major cure-all for the Monday Blues. Includes the following, in no particular order.

Coldplay. Lots of Coldplay. Preferably Parachutes. Also Radiohead. I never knew singing falsetto could be so liberating.
Sleep.
A nice book you can read for sometime before you drift off to sleep.
A nice Boss who lets you go home and says “Get-well-soon” too.

Feel much, much better now. My joints aren’t creaking anymore. The coffee tastes much better.

Hoo-aah!

Mondays are seriously bad for my system. Not only do I quit thinking logically, my body reacts in a very alarming way. It took me the morning to type in 13 lines of code. And I am not even sure if it’s gonna compile or not. I feel my joints creak as I get out of my chair to go to the coffee-machine. The coffee tastes bad. I can’t seem to decide whether I want to put my headphones on or not. I don’t want to code anymore. Am going home, I think. Sick of this.

Paanch Saal Baad

Five years ago, this is what I was –
I loved the Spice Girls, Aishwarya Rai, and a girl who studied in NID, Ahmedabad.
My best friend was a chap named Jyotiraj Sharma.
My idols were AR Rahman, Yanni, Frank Miller, Stephen King and Richard Feynman. ARR for his music, and his humility, Yanni for his showmanship, Frank Miller cos I had seen his artwork on Batman:Year One. Stephen King of course, for scaring the bejeezus out of me and for being one heckuva writer. Richard Feynman for all the gyaan he managed to bestow on me through his immortal three-volume lectures, and also for inspiring me to be a techie.
A standard quiz question from me would be this kind: (play a song with 5 people singing in it) OK guys, identify any two of these singers.
The biggest keyboard I had played was a PSR-299 (49 mini-keys, 100 voices and 50 “beats”)
The toughest chord I had played was A#7.The only time I had been onstage was in quizzes, the odd-extempore-speeches, a play i directed and acted in. My personal dream was to sing Vande Mataram LOUD onstage.
Rock music was “loud” and “stupid”. Rock singers were all suicidal and insane. Peter Andre’s Mysterious Girl was the coolest video I had seen. Stereo Nation was kewl!
The only thing I knew about the Internet – William Burroughs (Nota Bene: this is supposed to be William Gibson, not Burroughs…thanks, 2fargon)coined the term “CyberSpace” in a book called “Neuromancer”.
My idea of erotic nirvana was catching a glimpse of the latest Debonair or reading Ted Mark behind closed doors. Or maybe the occasional video cassette rented from the parlour furthest from home.
My favourite food five years ago was Masala Dosa.
Sexual status: Never been kissed. properly, I mean.
I would go to the barber‘s and have a haircut every week. “Keep it short” was my motto.

Right now….
I love a lot of beautiful people who are in my life. No actresses, singers, or fantasy creatures allowed access to my heart.
Best friend isn’t a concept I indulge in anymore. The only friend who has been consistently around, would be my discman. Maybe my future wife would be my best friend, by default. I haven’t talked to Jyotiraj Sharma for over two years. No mail for the past year.
Some of my idols remain. Some have drifted away. ARR still moves me. So does Miller. I have autographs of both…so I guess I can stop worshipping them and start treating them like normal people. My personal Pantheon has expanded. Includes that peculiar species called “college seniors”.
A standard quiz question from me would be:(looks at a page) This guy was born in the year 1935 somewhere in Timbuktoo. His real name was (struggles to pronounce the name) He did this, he did that, he married this female , did something to this guy. (turns the page) Basically, he was more famous for doing something ELSE. Let me play you an audio clip. (plays scratchy voiced mp3 on player) yeah, so this was from the movie he directed. Who is this guy?
(Couple of guys came to me the after the last quiz and asked me how I managed to get these Resnick and Halliday type-questions. “Practice” is what I replied )
I had a Yamaha PSR-520 keyboard that got busted after 3 years of faithful service. Am contemplating blowing up 65k on something BIG. Stageshows give me the creeps now, especially if the people onstage are singing/playing lousily. Feels odd when I am not onstage. Four years of dedicated MusiClubbing in college does that to you, I guess.
Toughest chord: dont remember for sure. It wwas for Vellai Pookkal.
Rock Music, Pop, World Music, Electronica, Classical, Metal, Hip-hop, Alternative – genres are for sissies, keep the music flowing, baby, and stash the genre. I dunno what video I like for sure, but it definitely isn’t Peter Andre.
The Internet? You don’t call it that anymore. it’s just The Net. and you dont go netsurfing wither. You just sit in your office and type. Why haven’t there been any emails the past 15 mins? Is my outlook working? (I haven’t read Neuromancer yet, though.)
Erotic nirvana: The Pearl. asstr.org. My Mama cds. My mind.
Spaghetti and Mediterranean chicken – a lethal culinary combo. Masala Dosa still rocks, though.
Sexual status: sighhhhh!!!
I visit the barber once in 2 months. To get the hair out of my eyes.

Manomanoman. I feel old.
Should things change radically in anyone’s life? No, of course it’s the world that’s changing. I am just adapting. Life goes on. Hurray!

Moulin Rouge

Baz Luhrmann, how on earth do you get these crazy ideas? You redefined the movie musical. You made Ewan McGregor sing Elton John, U2, and David Bowie songs. Nicole Kidman on “Someday I will Fly Away”. You made Henri Auguste Touluse-Lautrec a hip d00d. AND you gave Anu Malik his just dues. (AM’s name wasn’t mentioned anywhere on the OST, only Alka Yagnik and Sameer were creditted ) El Tango de Roxanne. The Absinthe fairy. Beauty, Truth and Love. “Come What May, I will love you, until my dying day. ”

You gave us Moulin Rouge. You made Hollywood let its hair down and have FUN!

Baz, You are God! Welcome to my personal Pantheon.

(And psasi and Vasu, thanks a million. I know it’s too late, almost 4 months have passed by, but still…..)
