A thoroughly materialistic yearning

OK, this sounds real bad, but I have never seen a movie on DVD in my life. Have seen DivX rips galore, half of them with sound/action out-of-sync and equally bad as the neighbourhood pirated vcds.

That’s because I don’t have a DVD player, OR a DVD drive for my computer. And try as I might, I can’t prioritise my needs to accomodate a souped-up system at this point of time. The chain of flow is kind of this way –
I buy a DVD drive for my computer. Then to enjoy the DVD experience to the fullest, I would need a better set of speakers. Preferably a 5.1 speaker set. Preferably Creative Cambridge Soundworks. Better speakers won’t necessarily sound better on my primitive soundcard, so I need to upgrade that too….the Processor and Motherboard comes next…and so on and on and on.

Ok, I get a new computer. A souped-up mindblowin monsta of a computer at that. That takes care of my Music/Movie/Gaming needs, right? WRONG!!! What about THE FREAKING KEYBOARD???? My Yamaha’s still busted. The moron at the repair centre kept it for three months and now he says that two transistors have blown and he can’t get them in Hyderabad. So I can listen to music, but I can’t MAKE any music. (The thought counts! ) Not one without the other. Both or none. See how greedy I am?

(I don’t understand how all my materialistic yearnings at this point of time boil down to just a Computer and a High-range keyboard. Just wait till I somehow manage to get both, my needs are going to increase. Increase dramatically at that. )

Hmm, so no seeing DVDs at this point of time. But wait, that shouldn’t stop me from collecting DVDs right? Ta-DA! That’s what I seem to be doing – my first DVD – free at that – came with the Audio cd of Chicago that I just bought. Contains three videos from the movie, a Behind-the-scenes section, and some of the demoes from the original Musical. The cd cover says so, and I guess I would have to take that. No way I can confirm it, for now.

Methinks this is an Omen. Please God, give me strength to control that overwhelming desire to go to Chenoy Trade Centre and ….

No. No. NO.

(Yes. Yes. Yesssssss. )

Hmmm. Was I thinking of Gollum or Singing in The Rain just now?

    • True, but owing to the fact that you have the Singing In The Rain vcd (i.e I haven’t seen it for a long time) and that Gollum is fresh in my mind. (Saw TTT again yesterday :-P ), I stay with Gollum. We likes us, preciousssssss.

  1. Greed of the hour

Ok, I get a new computer. A souped-up mindblowin monsta of a computer at that. That takes care of my Music/Movie/Gaming needs

More, more and more HARDWARE is NEED not a GREED :-D

how come you forgot a GeForce in the list ;-)

    • Re: Greed of the hour

Somethings are so implicit that we needs not mention them. Could have gone on and on, but would u care to hear about ravings related to DVD-writers and LCD-projectors? :-P

  2. the cycle never ends!
sometimes i think its a good thing i don’t have enough money to splurge. :) i don’t have to make the choice.

    and i’m voting for gollum.

    • sometimes i think its a good thing i don’t have enough money to splurge

There was a time when I managed my life with 2.5k per month, plus the odd-quiz earnings. Wait till you start earning, u’ll never know where it all goes. (provided u have the same materialistic yearnings i have)

      We loves Smeagol, too. :”>

    • Which DVD did u get?

27 mins of footage from Chicago. Behind the Scenes stuff, the original musical demoes and some videos. GOt it free with the audio cd.

And Gollum gets my vote any day

Nice Gollum! We be nice to suku-lady anyday.

  3. Solution
    1) Tell me which transistors you need, I will get them for free. I can order any amount of electronic devices, and they will arrive from Taiwan if they arent available in the US, for free.

2)DVD players are just 25 dollars here, thats like 5 meals at Wendy’s or Subway. All you have to do is wish out loud, and they will be there too.

I am damn serious about the transistors. Ah, would I let my friend suffer for the lack of components?

      • Nasty, nasty mask-man HA-HA-ses at Smeagol!
        Calls Smeagol dumbasses.

BAD Mask-man! Smeagol sticks tongue out and

        rphthbhthbthrphthbhthbthrphthbhthbth!!!!!!

        Good Smeagol! :”>

    • I can’t possibly wait for too long for the keyboard to get fixed. And the transistors going bad and all, that’s what the repair-man says, and i dunno if he’s just spewing shite, methinks a trip to chennai is in the offing. Let’s see.
DVD players – nope, not going for them, gotta think evolution. Someday i might need to copy DVDs, so the beter option is a PC-compatible device…like a DVD drive, and a souped-up PC to go with it. :-P

Thanks a million for the offer, da. Don’t worry, i will ask u for a Korg Trinity Sound module when i need one. ;-)

        • You hook up a Sound Module to a keyboard(even a simple one like my PSR-520) , and the module is a bank of sounds that can be expanded using sample cds/actual sampling, and the sounds can be mapped to keys of the controller keyboard. So when you play the keys of the 520, you get sounds from the sound module. which incidentally, are MUCH better than a normal keyboard sound.

That particular craving is going to take some more time to materialise. (pun not intended! )

  4. nope!

    >OK, this sounds real bad, but I have never seen a movie on DVD in my life.

No, it doesn’t sound all that bad to me, maybe because I haven’t seen any either :)

  5. Don’t you love CTC?! I love getting lost in the maze of those hardware shops, even though I’m not familiar enough with electronics fundes to know that a 555 is a chip, not a pack of Marlboro’s.

I love the dingy surroundings, the confusion at the busy shops, the slimy way the Marwari dealers size you up to see how much they can cheat you, and then finally treating myself to chat and pani puri at the corner of Parklane after a hard day’s work at bargaining down the prices!

    • Yes, yes, yessssssss. :-)

The best part is taking quotations from 2 dealers and then fielding down the prices by a one-on-one comparison.

finally treating myself to chat and pani puri at the corner of Parklane

I prefer the panipuri at Abids, though! those guys know me by name now. ;-)
