The Book of Yellow.

or rather, Daredevil:Yellow. It was worth the wait.

Gotham has loads of new titles. I think they have the continuity problems worked out now, so instead of printing random stories now and then, they are starting afresh with titles that have a single continuity point. Point in case: Batman:Hush, Daredevil:Marvel Knights, Spiderman by Paul Jenkins ( Sasi, this is the guy who wrote Origin ), Mark Waid’s soap operatic take on Fantastic Four ( I believe he was fired from the title this year, just as he was getting warmed up), also a manga standalone Marvel Comic ( serioussam, you hear? )

Pros: Everything.
Cons: I will think of something soon enough.

Some chap in IIM Kolkata has 5.5 GB of scanned DC/Marvel comics on his hard disk and is sharing it over the network. Me and Sasi will be stopping over in Kolkata when we are coming back from Guwahati. *insert maniacal laughter here*

The first time in recorded human history, I have finished preparations for a quiz three days in advance. Not only that, I have also used Power PointTM for the audios. Saves me the bother of trying to hide the player or the ID3 tags. I tried hard not to be smart-alecky with the questions. Let’s see.

What if the RIAA( or it’s Indian equivalent, the one that’s charging money from college Music Events ) tries to charge money from me and IIMB for playing audio clips? After all, it’s a commercial enterprise, both me and the team-members will be making money out of playing and listening to music. Can the RIAA charge me if I use lyrics from songs? I mean, can I quote lyrics from songs in public, or will that be copyright infringement?

Me walk down the road. Me stumbles. “Ow! F***! F***! F***!”
Tap on shoulder. “Hello, young man, you have been issued a subpoena by the RIAA in association with the John Lennon Estate. For using words copyrighted by the Estate. See you in court, and have a nice day. ”

Don’t laugh. The way things are going, this is what it’s all leading to.

  1. Don’t know if you caught the news or not but Mark Waid has been reinstated on FF and there won’t be a lull between his ‘runs’ on the book.

    Comics are silly sometimes.

  2. I hear you brother! I bought the Manga comic(its the one with all Marvel characters in a mangaverse, and done by different artists, right?), but DD:Yellow remains elusive. Will have to scrounge again… Hows it by the way?
And Batman:Hush is out too? Oh joy! Oh joy!

    • A new issue of Hush is out, yes. It has vol 3 (the killer Killer Croc cover) and an added story ( yes, it’s a double-sized issue) by Ed Brubaker that talks about the Urban Legend aspect of Batman. Neat-o!

I know I needn’t say this, but don’t miss Daredevil:Yellow. I loved the bit about the pistachio nuts.

I haven’t checked out the Manga comic, no time the other day. I bought Ultimate Spiderman too. heh heh.

I chanced upon one of the new Gotham versions of Spiderman at a friends place in Bombay about two days back… The illustration quality is way better than when I used to read Spiderman as a kid…
Each frame, as well as the format is much more ‘in-your-face’… but I found the storyline kinda inane…

    Maybe it’s just me…

    • Inane. Hmm.

      :-P

Well, there are three Spiderman titles that Gotham puts out just now. ( That’s to confuse the heck out of innocent people who happen to stumble onto their comics, trust me). There is also a Spidergirl comic that has absolutely nothing to do with the Marvel Universe as we know it. (May Parker, Peter P’s daughter is Spidergirl??? Blaaagh! )

The third title, the Amazing Spiderman, started out with issue one from this month, it’s a double-sized issue which examines Peter’s early days as a fresh grad student out in New York City.

Out of the original two titles, there’s Brian Michael Bendis’s Ultimate Spiderman which is a complete new look at the Spiderman mythos, with more emphasis on characterisation and buildup than on web-swinging antics. I normally suggest this book to anyone who’s new to comics, and would like to try something fun and literary-oriented at the same time.

ah, now we come to John Byrne’s retelling of the Spiderman story. Which, my friend, is a mess. That guy is a dinosaur. His characters talk the same way someone in a Ram-Leela would. ( I talk that way sometimes, when I want to piss my friends off) There are fights on every other page and …*sigh* you get the picture.

I suggest ( you knew this was coming, didn’t you? :) ) that you invest an amount of 90 rupees into something called Ultimate Spiderman Super Special vol 1. It has a picture of the Hulk and Spidey on the cover. Don’t read the first story. The second half of the book is a reprint of issues 1-3 of Ultimate Spiderman. Read it. I promise I’ll refund your money if you don’t like it.

      aaaaaaaaaah! another satisfied customer. :-D
