The One With the Bad Experience.

Ok, the haiku sucked. So did the experience.

I went and bought Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne two days ago, along with Mafia. It was Payne I had gone to find and it was Payne that I tried installing first.

Dung! It didn’t even detect the first disc. Tried all possible methods including a dos-copy of the files to the HD first, and then a linux-copy. Didn’t work. Mafia installed properly, but even when I tried out the initial heist-getaway episode of Mafia, my mind was screaming Payne-ful obscenities at pirates who didn’t bother to be diligent enough to check whether the stuff they are selling work or not. Whatever happened to honour among thieves?

Yesterday at lunchtime, I popped over to Koti again and exchanged the it. There were no other copies of Payne2 left. ( Oooh, it burns me up to think that at this moment, there are other snotty brats in my city who are actually playing Max Payne 2 and I. COULDN’T. GET. THE. CD. Double dung! )

Well, anyways, I got Halo: Combat Evolved and Star Wars:Jedi Academy. Three cds for the price of two, because, as I explained to the shop-owner, I actually had had to spend a lot of money on the auto-fare ( thankfully, he didn’t say anything smart-alecky about taking the bus ). Came back and checked to see that both of them were working. Hmm. Didn’t install them, will finish Return To Castle Wolfenstein first, and then look for alternatives.

Yum, yum, yum, I am getting a joystick for the first time in my life!!! Yippeee-de-do-dah!!

Good Experience of the Week: Whee! I got Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells II as a gift from Chandru! The original TB is not to be found anywhere ( in CD format, tapes being available. Somewhat. ) This one’s not too bad, got some rehashes of the familiar Tubular Bells theme. Unluckily, with all the game-frenzy, I have been unable to give it a proper listen. Well, the weekend should take care of that.

Embarassing Experience of the Week: The fly of my Jeans refusing to close after a quick trip to the loo…

The calendar on my desk, the one with the oddball words of advice for every day of the year. says: Evil multiplies when good men don’t champion what’s right. For some odd reason, I see Dr. Evil in his hideout, saying “4 times 20 is 90, no, 80″…..

  1. Hey totally unrelated but I thought you might the best person to ask.. but would you know if Alan Moore’s the Watchmen is any good.. I mean I have heard it is good, and that it predates Gaiman in so many ways, but me wonders if that’s just the common word on the street..but truly, is it worth forking out 14 pounds for? Or just worth reading standing up in a crowded bookshop that displays books unwrapped? Or not worth reading at all?

Apologies, if this book is so damn amazing it is in a league of its own like Tolkien and LOTR etc etc. My graphic novel knowledge has been limited to the Sandman thus far

    Thanks =)

    • Actually, the book is so damn amazing it is in a league of its own like Tolkien and LOTR. ;-)

I have read ( and own) the first issue of Watchmen, and it bowled me over, really. I have searched a lot for the remaining comics but haven’t been able to find them. Together with The Dark Knight Returns, this book was part of the renaissance of intelligent comic-books of the 80’s, and yes, it did influence the creation of Sandman and all the other comic-“book”s that followed.

The difference between Sandman and this would be – superheroes. This is not epic fantasy. This is about Spandex-clad beings who act as believable characters, rather than mouthing inane dialogues and throwing cars at each other. While Sandman is enjoyable just for the intricate storylines and the storytelling, Watchmen is known for its look at Superheroes and how they would figure in the contemporary world. Anyone who has read Superman and Batman and comes across something like Watchmen would say “Whoa! that’s awesome.” Someone who’s not into superhero comics might just retort – “huh! what’s the big deal?” ( “might” being the keyword :)

That’s the only thing that prevents me from saying outright – “go and buy the book, it’s worth every penny!”

The verdict: Maybe u could give it a chance. It would be impossible to read any page of this book standing in a bookshop and appreciating the care and subtle hints Gibbons and Moore have placed in the book. ( Yes, it’s a mystery, and they say you have to reread it to figure out all the threads.)

You could try looking for Alan Moore’s take on Swamp Thing – the definitive Occult comic of the 80’s. Look for trades collecting storylines between Swamp Thing issues 20-53. If you are interested in Batman enough, The Dark Knight Returns and Year One by Frank Miller. All perfect storytelling in the graphic medium.

Tell me if and when you buy it, right? :)

      • Wow.. Thank you for all that. It was exactly as I read about it…but just clarified lots.I read this page of quotes that had some from the watchmen and if they were anything to go by, you are right.. I think I just might treat myself to LXG 1 and 2 (have you read them?! I read the first one and it is hilarious and smart and oh wow..) and The Watchmen for Christmas. Unless I can’t get to a copy first. :)

Incidentally, didn’t Gaiman write for Swamp Thing onec or twice? I could have sworn I read that somewhere..

        Thanks again =)

        • I have read the LXG book 1, and it’s terrific!

I think Gaiman did work on Sandman, but I was not into Swampy before or after Moore’s run on the series. He revitalized the character way back in the 80’s – between 1984 and 1987, and then left, and a lot of different writers took over. I have read most of the Moore STs, but I don’t own them ( sniff!)

You can download cbz versions of LXG vol 2 here. :)

P.S did a google search and came up with this,

  2. Hey – what joystick are you getting?

BTW, I’m still here in good ol’ Gachibowli! :( My trip is cancelled and I don’t know when I will go again. So your CDs are still with me, if that’s ok with you.

    • Bwah! I got a Frontech Joystick and the darned thing refuses to work! am returning it today.

My trip is cancelled and I don’t know when I will go again
Hard luck, buddy! No problemo about the cds, just keep them safe, tha-tha-that’s all. :)

  3. You know its just a matter of time before you’re playing Payne…. Yup! maal is on its way….
Um, They said they let you choose your saber style in Jedi Academy, but when it starts all I got were single handed variants. Lemme know how it turns out, k?

    • Hey thanks! I am sending your stuff tomorrow, am getting the tamper-proof cd-envelope today. :)

Seems the saber-variants ( dual-handed et al) you get only after a particular level. Lemme see how it works.
