Hyderabad Book Fair. Discounts galore.
Found the twice-bought-already classic ( IMO) Summer of 42, by Herman Raucher for 30 rupees. This time, I am not letting it out of my sight.
AA Milne – The House on Pooh Corner, a hardbound edition, for 25 rupees.
Shirley Jackson – The Lottery and Other Stories – Hardcover, 135 Rs. A writer praised by Stephen King for her contributions to the horror genre. Got this in the first stall we went to, and I almost missed this, because I got confused between Shirley Jackson and the other infamous Shirley, la Maclaine.
Robert Heinlein – I Will Fear No Evil, 30 Rs. I don’t believe this, but I don’t have the e-version of this particular book!
Armageddon 2419 A.D.: The Seminal “Buck Rogers” Novel by Philip Francis Nowlan, Rs 25. I bet this is going to be good.
Valerio Manfredi – Alexander: The Ends of the Earth. Volume 3 of the series, and my cup doth be full. Definitely a lucky break, for 70 Rs.
Orson Scott Card – The Seventh Son:Book one of the Alvin Maker series, 75 Rs. contentedbloke, this is all your fault, really. Thanks for introducing me to a great writer, and I hope this series turns out well, too.
Stephen R Donaldson – Lord Foul’s Bane: Book One of Thomas Covenant, Unbeliever, 75 Rs. Another series I had heard quite a lot about, and thought I would give it a try.
Frank Herbert – Dune, Dune Messiah , Rs 30 and Rs 70 each. Books 1 and 2 of the Dune series.Technically I have both, but they are still unavailable in the market, and I thought I could help out some needy friend. So, anyone want?
Meg Cabot – The Princess Diaries book 4, Rs 50. Hats off to Meg Cabot for writing such an endearing life-history of Pricess Amelia Thermopolis. I found all three books white-heat reads, and this one starts off on an interesting note, too. Yeah, I am reading girlie fiction. So freakin what? Hunh? Hunh? HUNH?
Philip Pullman – The Subtle Knife, Rs 75. So I bought book 3 first, now I got book 2. Please god, let me find book 1 at a proper discount sale so I can get started with the series.
Also, on Sunday, I had bought The Minority Report and Other Stories by Philip K Dick, and Ain’t It Cool by Harry Knowles ( which I am reading right now) and The Road to Wellville by T Coraghessan Boyle.
near misses: Tales from Watership Down by Richard Adams, which Rishi bought for a princely 100 Rs.
Found a book on indie-film-makers with bios ( pretty detailed, too) of people like Fincher, Tarantino, the Coen brothers, which was priced at 200 Rs. Sari and Sins by Nisha Minhas ( more girlie romances, yes, I loved Chapatti or Chips)was on sale for 200, and I didn’t want to spend so much.
And, and, and: The Mahabharata, the complete Mahabharata, translated by Kishori Mohan Ganguli, in four humongous paperback volumes at 1600 rupees ( and 9 hardcover volumes at 3500). Now this was something I had seen three years ago at the selfsame Book Fair, and I am betting it was the same stall. I was a penniless college student then, and couldn’t even think of buying it. And now, I can do more. I can actually buy it. Hyuk hyuk.
You are obscene.
Was it something I said? Because I read girlie fiction? Excessive use of hokey cliches?
Because wherever you go, a discount sale is sure to follow.
Girlie fiction! *tee hee hee*.
You leave me with muchos blushos.
You sniffer! X-D
Right. Laugh at my cold. Go on. I can’t think of any spiffy responses at the moment.
Hes right y’know. You ALWAYS get the best deal in books. Here I am, saving up to buy these VERY books, and you get them for the price I wouldn’t dream of getting them for. :)
Absolutely mind boggling, the book collection you now must have. Great buys dude, great buys. I am now even more resolute in finding a job and moving to Hyderabad.

Now thats out of the way, let me see…
Dune Messiah, there’s a good boy. Sam can get Dune 1 if he was first in line.
Then..the indie film makers book, if its good. Hell, I’ll buy it at Rs 200 even if its not that great. Pretty please ?
Aahhh…!
Re: Me ! Me ! Me !
Thy Will be done. No objections, Sam?
Er, I think one of my colleagues was thinking of picking up the filmmakers’ book. Will ask him, and let u know.
Re: Me ! Me ! Me !
No problemo… I’ll just buy Messiah here.(sigh)
did you buy the mahabharata? if you have not yet bought it for starters satisfy yourself with a book called Yuganta by irawati karve.
rest of the books………. i think you got steal prices. now i await the book fair in mumbai at sunderabai hall….
I currently have five versions of the Mahabharata, was actually thinking of buying this version, because it’s complete, no second thoughts.
But i am curious about Yuganta. What’s the book about? A retelling of the Mahabharata?
yuganta is the collection of essays on characters of mahabharata.
it is written in marathi and then translated in english.
irawati karve the author is very well informed about the epic.
you have five versions of mahabharata? can you name the publisher and authors?
C Rajagopalachari, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.
RK Narayan, Orient.
William Buck, I forget which publishing company,
Kamala Subramanium, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.
Elaine Aaron, Bantam books ( i think)
Ok, i bought the Kishuri Mohan Ganguli version too. And if u count the Amar Chitra Katha version and the assamese versions we have at home, that makes it 8 versions of the Mahabharata. :)
Bargain Hunter Beatzo !!
Good to know that turning vegetarian doesn’t mean there are no excellent reasons left for me to consider Hyderabad as a possible future abode :-)
Excellent haul – hope you find the time & enthusiasm to read all of them in the not so distant future.
I hope to finish Princess Diaries book IV by tonight. The rest of them, by and by. ;-)
I remember the time when you were drooling over the verysame Mahabharata three years ago. THREE YEARS!! Long time, dude!
Gosh! You remember!! :)
Amazing collection of books, dude! And BTW, Nightfall by Asimov is too good… Maybe I’ll now checkout his other books…
