Quizmasterly Tips

How Not To Be A Jerk When Conducting A Quiz, part 1: When you are doing the prelims on powerpoint, NUMBER the bloomin’ slides. Otherwise, when someone asks you in the middle of the round – “Was that question 19 or 20?” and you find yourself fumbling for an answer, much Egg shall drip from your face. Especially when the marauding masses ask the same thing every two minutes (with varying question-numbers).

How Not To Be a Jerk When Conducting a Quiz, part 2: Have a test slide before the powerpoint show with embedded audio and video clips in it, and play them before the quiz begins. That way, you will know, when you click on a slide and find out that the bloomin’ audio clip does not play, whether the problem lies with the audio cable, or your moronic miscopying of the folders from the CD. And you will have an idea of the volume levels.

How Not To Be a Jerk After the Quiz is Over, part 1: REMEMBER THE QUESTIONS YOU ASKED, DIMWIT!!!!! Not just the answers, THE QUESTIONS. Because there might be a chance that the quizmaster the next day might ask a semi-mutilated version of the SAME QUESTION YOU ASKED yesterday, and you might be the only person in the auditorium not writing down the correct answer. Faugh!

p.s: Remember my experiences about asking a question onstage and then forgetting the answer? At least that didn’t happen this time. Whew.

  1. Oh dear. I’m obssessive-compulsive about any questions I put up for public view, so that stuff hasn’t happened to me yet. But I do have this habit of insisting on having some guy do the quiz with me, so I can always run away in panic after handing the mike to him. [and yes, I’ve done it, under the pretext of checking the av equipment] You should probably also take a fall guy around with you wherever you go. :-) Just out of curiosity, which quiz? I’ve been offline more than online.

  2. Mister Quizmaster, the quiz was really well done (Yes, number the questions the next time) but don’t you remember the impressed applauds after some really tricky questions? And, the X,Y,Z round left everyone stupefied.

I don’t think anyone really minded HNTBAJWCAQ, parts 1 and 2. HNTBAJATQIO part 1 was really funny though.
The XYZ thingie is going to be in fashion at IITD quizzes for some time to come.
Srinjoy’s Gen Quiz was pretty decent, wasn’t it? And the general standard of all quizzes was so much better than last year. Those of us who had been there last year missed Mr Gautam Ghosh though. I have a feeling you aren’t going to comment on that.

      Not for me, m’boy. :)

Feeling mighty pleased about the XYZ thingie. *purr*

Srinjoy’s quiz was quite decent, I had a teeny gripe about the visuals in both his quizzes though. I would not really want to say anything about GG, as you correctly guessed. ;-)

  4. Nihilanth and all

Oh man, I am sad I couldnt attend Nihilanth this year. Hopefully in future I will, if things go as planned. (They never do, do they?)

Who won your quiz? IIM Cal guys, sweeping away like last year???

    • Re: Nihilanth and all

IIM Cal and IIM B didn’t turn up. IITM kinda swept most of the events.

You might try out the dry MELA prelims questions, up on .
