Holy Prabhakar!

Now that all the oursourcing jokes have died down, the comic-book that was supposed to be released last June is finally out in India. And no, I am not going to buy it. I had read seven preview pages on Newsarama when the US edition was released – it came out in the States sometime in November, didn’t you know? – and those seven pages were enough. Available for 15 Rupees at your local newsstand.

Kindly support Good Comics by NOT buying it, and by telling everyone you know not to buy it. Buy Ultimate Spiderman or Planetary instead. USM is on issue 27 right now, but you can always go catch up on backissues by reading the trades at Landmark, or buying back-issues which are freely available everywhere. Planetary is on issue 2, and it gets better as it goes on, so check it out sometime.

Anyways, here‘s the link to the seven-page preview, to help you decide for yourself.

  1. ahahahhahahaha… The Dhoti is neat! As Edna Mode would say, “Gobble, gobble, gobble, too much of it, darling” :P

And she was SO averse to capes. Look at the dhoti flying all around. Imagine if it is snagged in some kinda trap. eeheehee

    • Strictly old school, eh?

I like the Ultimate Stuff, though Secret and Nightmare don’t really seem to be going too good. They brought me back to Marvel, so I can’t really complain.

  2. you know, i never did tell you what i thought about it back when you first mentioned it.

if anything, i think they’re just hoping that it introduces the mass audience to comics, which means more $$$ (or Rs. Rs. Rs.?).

as a stand alone product, it’s cringe-worthy to the extreme, but i’m hoping that it’ll break comics out to a much wider indian audience, which will end up inspiring kids to be comic artists and create a scene on par with the US and japan.

can you imagine the indian comics scene in 10-15 years if it catches on and gets huge? of course, i’m trying to see the silver lining in the dark cloud.

    • The way I see it, there were two reasons why this comic happened in the first place. The first was to capitalize on the Indian audience’s sense of curiousity – and also pandering to the local chest-thumping populace (“ooh. Spiderman is Indian! Boo, America!”), thus making Rs.Rs.Rs. – and the second was by appealing to the curiousity of the fans in the States, thereby earning $$$.

but i’m hoping that it’ll break comics out to a much wider indian audience, which will end up inspiring kids to be comic artists and create a scene on par with the US and japan.

In this case, I am afraid I can’t see how it would inspire kids to come up with a new idea. I can imagine some kid looking at the artwork of Spiderman India, and throwing away all the sketches he had been making for quite sometime, of quirky new characters of his own. Instead, he draws a dhoti on another American character – like Superman or the Hulk and bam! there, he has an “Indian” version of the character. Which, by the high standards Gotham Comics has set, makes him a Superstar Artist.

Believe me, there’s nothing I want more than the Comic-book scene here getting big, which is why I buy Gotham, and support all the stuff they are reprinting here. But Spiderman India?? That’s a travesty.

  3. sheeyet. yeah. I discovered Planetary last evening. It sparks! and the art in Ultimates had me doing cartwheels for a while. Gotham is just lucky they’re pushing to a comic starved audience. They’ve fukd up too many times on deadlines, misprints and format changes. um… but they also brought planetary.

  4. What really cracks me up is imagining his first fight with Doc Ock! Can you just visualise two of his arms creeping up behind spidey-bhai and pulling his dhoti !! LoL!!
